TOPIC VI: FUNDING FOR BIKING & WALKING

Funding for biking and walking projects comes from a variety of sources. There is data available on the use of federal funds for biking and walking projects at the state and national level. State funding and local funding is not reported in ways that allow easy analysis and surveys are the primary sources of information for that funding.

NATIONAL DATA

STATE DATA

State funding for biking and walking is often not reported in any public manner. The data provided on this page was obtained through surveys of state Department of Transportations or through the Federal Highway Administration. State laws that constrain local funding tools are also shown.

CITY DATA

Spending data at the city level is rarely publicly available or reported in consistent formats. Data on this page comes from survey responses.

Cities reported a wide range in the amount dedicated to bicycling and walking. Among large cities, five cities reported funding of less than $1 per capita and three cities reported funding of at least $40 per capita.
