The League of American Bicyclists and the Safe Routes Partnership partnered to review each state’s Transportation Alternatives process. Each state is responsible for administering Transportation Alternatives funding through a competitive process and reporting on the outcomes of that process to the Federal Highway Administration.
These Fact Sheets are meant to provide an overview of the competitive Transportation Alternatives process in each state. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021, there are two important changes to be aware of:
- States can now use Transportation Alternatives funding to provide technical assistance to communities. If your community does not have experience with the Transportation Alternatives competitive process or needs assistance, please ask your state for help.
- States now have new flexibility for fulfilling the 20% match requirement. If your community lacks local funding for a match, please ask your state about this new flexibility.
